- The Real McCoy Comments:
Years ago, when I was the Human Resource manager in a large
multi-nation company, we hit a bad patch in the economy and
business began to fall off at an alarming rate. Redundancies
were at the top of management's agenda and the employees and
trade unions were getting very angry. So senior management organised
a series of staff meetings to try and boost staff morale and
tell everyone that things were not quite as bad as they perceived
them to be. These were stirring meetings, full of encouraging
words and optimistic forecasts. And, at the end of the meetings,
the board of management were very pleased with what they had
achieved. They believed that they had got employees to 'think'
more positively. But, alas, the benefits of these meeting didn't
last very long. Soon, doubts began to creep in among the workforce.
You see, it's not enough to make people 'think' in the heat
of the moment that they can achieve something. They have to
'believe it' if they are to achieve anything worthwhile. This
is a motivational speech about getting people to work together
and 'believe it' ... not just 'think it'.
